Nev Schulman, star of "Catfish: The TV Show" in 2012. |
Nev came to mainstream with his indie film "Catfish" which tells the story of a young Nev who fell in love online. His filmmaker friends documented the whole ordeal and when things between Schulman and Megan (the female he met online) became fishy (totally not a humorous pun.) Nev and his friends decided to to do some investigating. Throughout the documentary we come to find out that a 40 year old(ish) woman named Angela was the voice and character behind the fictional Megan. Heartbroken and confused, Nev was left trying to understand the deceit and lack of empathy the "young girl" he thought he was in love with had towards him.
Fast forward to the present, Nev had a feeling he wasn't the only person in the world who had a similar story.. so he teamed up with MTV to create a television series based upon their film. "Catfish: The TV Show" tells the story of others who fell victim to the same fate Nev had faced. Most of the stories so far haven't ended the fairytale way. With each new story and person we meet, we see the emotion and empathy that Nev has for both the person who had been played, and the person who was doing the playing. That alone shows you how understanding and compassionate Nev is. He tries to help the person that's hurt cope and move on, and then he tries to help the person with a fake profile understand why they can't be themselves and the problems/issues their facing.
Always hoping for a happy ending for the people who appear on the show, Nev is a fresh face and someone who really has a good heart.
With boatloads of celebrities tweeting about how addicting and messed up the show is, I have a feeling "Catfish: The TV Show" will be an MTV staple for many more seasons to come.
Nev, if you're reading this.. I love you!
